Matching cat tattoos with bow ties

Thigh · Mixed · Photo

Two cartoon cat head tattoos with large round eyes and small bow ties sit side by side on two people's upper legs. The left cat is drawn in a bold black outline with white fill and no colour, while the right cat has blue and pale tones, orange-red stripes and a red bow. The photograph is close and shallow in focus, with a grey top and floral skirt visible at the right edge.

Dear Joan,

The Harrogate train is late again, so I am writing this on the back of Mr Pargeter's delivery slip, which is all the paper the shop has left until Thursday. You will laugh, but last night I went up to the attic for the tin of Christmas ribbons and found your old drawing book under the eiderdown box. Page nine, the cat with the bow tie, the one you swore was a tom because of the cheek of him. You had drawn him in pencil, then gone over the outline in Indian ink so hard the nib split.

I could not leave him alone. After tea I took the book and Mother's old watercolours to the kitchen table, and I gave him stripes, orange ones, the colour of the marmalade we never had enough of during the war. I gave his fur a blue like the sky over the allotments at six o'clock, then a red bow to match. I made his eyes purple, which you would hate, because they look ever so surprised about it.

Here is the funny part. This morning Dolly from the post office came in with her sleeve rolled up and asked whether I did little pictures. When I said I had once done a cat, she showed me one she had had done at the Easter fair, a pair of cats, one plain and one striped, with bows at their necks. She said her sister had the other. Dolly had never heard of you. I told her I knew a girl who would have liked to be asked.

Write soon, and bring the good scissors when you come home at Whitsun.

Love, Mavis
