Matching crown tattoos reading One Life and One Love
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two wrists are shown with matching black crown tattoos, each set above a line of script lettering. The left reads One Life and the right reads One Love, and the crowns are shaded in black and grey with fine detail in the ornamentation. The clasped hands and a ring on one finger sit against a dark, softly blurred background.

The Crown Ballroom had a sprung floor that bounced under your heels, and Mr Okafor, who ran the cloakroom, swore the boards had been laid over the old tram sheds so the building still remembered how to move. I was seventeen and had spent a month sweeping sequins off the stage before anyone let me near the dancers.

Eli Dunmore was the sign-writer's son who painted the bandstand lettering each spring. He had a steady hand and a tin of black enamel he kept in his jacket pocket, and one wet Thursday he sat me on an upturned crate in the cloakroom and drew a small crown on the inside of my wrist with a sable brush. Then he drew one on his own. Under mine he wrote One Life, and under his, One Love, and he made me check the spelling twice because he said a sign-writer's mistakes last longer than anyone's.
He went to the docks at Hull the autumn after, and the letters on my arm faded a little each year, the way enamel does on a shop front. I kept dancing in the same hall with the same broom. Last month my granddaughter, who has no patience for the old waltz, held my wrist up under the strip lights and asked why the two words sat so close together. I told her a crown only looks right when someone else is holding the other end of it.
