Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two wrists are shown with matching black tattoos, each a shaded crown above script lettering. The left reads 'One Life' and the right reads 'One Love', with fine linework and grey shading in the crowns. The hands are clasped together against a dark, softly blurred background, and a ring is visible on one finger.

At quarter past two the queue behind the glass had thinned to a single lorry driver and a woman holding a shoebox tied with garden twine. Marta Halloran slid the box under the screen without being asked, the way people do when they expect a question. Inside, wrapped in a tea towel, were two brass seals no longer than a thumb, each cast as a crown, the letters on their bases worn almost smooth.

"They were my grandmother's," the woman said. "She had them made in a village that doesn't exist any more, on the far side of the river. She travelled with them twice. Once to leave, once to come back for him." Marta turned one over under the lamp. ONE LIFE. The other read ONE LOVE. She had worked the desk for nineteen years and stamped more visas than she could count, but nobody had ever handed her a pair of things that were meant to fit together.
The declaration form asked for goods of value. Marta wrote "two seals, brass, no commercial worth" and then sat looking at it. The lorry driver rapped on the glass. She could have waved the woman through. Instead she pressed each seal into the blotter beside her keyboard, one after the other, and the two crowns came up clean and black, the words beneath them reversed on the blotter and then the right way round on the sheet she lifted away.
"Keep them together," Marta said, sliding the form back. "Declare them as a pair. That's all the paperwork they need." The woman read the page as though it were a letter, folded it once, and walked out into the grey morning with the crowns held close in her coat pocket.
