Queen and King script tattoos on wrists
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two wrists are shown side by side, each with a black script tattoo: the word Queen on the left wrist and King on the right. The lettering uses thin, flowing strokes with a looped capital Q and K, and the ink is solid black with no shading. The warm, soft-focus photo shows a gold chain bracelet on one wrist, with a yellow fabric background.

The ink was still weeping when Dolly Hurst put the kettle on for the third time, and you sat at her scrubbed table with your sleeve pushed up and your wrist stinging like a nettle. Through the window the winding wheel at Harrowgate stood still for the first time in forty years, its cable hanging slack over the pit head like washing nobody had come to take in.

The bet had been daft. Ruth Ainsley had wagered a week's coal money that she could outdrink you at the Welfare on a Friday, and when you lost, you had to let Tommy Speke, who'd learned his trade from a sailor in Sunderland, scratch the words on with a borrowed machine that buzzed like a trapped wasp. Ruth went first, hissing through her teeth. She chose Queen because somebody had to run the house while the other two went underground to be heroes. You picked King out of pure spite.
Then the lads came up from the lower face with word about the roof, and nobody in the row slept. Ruth's dad sat on his step polishing the gold chain she'd bought from the pawn shop in Durham, the one she'd meant to wear down the aisle, and said nothing at all. When the cage finally rattled up with both of them blinking in the lamplight, you were already at the gate, wrist throbbing, holding the chain like a rope.
Back at Dolly's, Ruth held out her arm without a word. You fastened the clasp across both wrists so the two words sat side by side, and the wheel at Harrowgate gave one long groan and began to turn.
