Matching crown tattoos reading One Life and One Love
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two wrists are shown with clasped hands, each carrying a crown tattoo above a line of script lettering. The left reads One Life and the right reads One Love, both in dark grey or black ink. The crowns are finely shaded with detailed linework, and the soft, warm-toned photograph is centred on the joined hands.

Dear Ilse, the snow came down the pass three days early, so the carrier never reached us with your parcel, and I have been sitting at the window with the lamp lit, thinking about the two crowns Tomas cut into the boulder beside the milestone.

You remember how her father, old Anders Lind, kept the toll gate and would not hear of his daughter marrying a man with no land and a borrowed chisel. So Maud and Tomas met after dark at that stone. He cut a crown on the north face with the words One Life beneath it, and she cut her own crown on the south face with One Love under hers. Two days of scraping, and the letters came out crooked, but they were theirs. Her father found the scratches on his boots and laughed for a whole evening, and I think that laugh was the first kind thing he had done for years.
In February the avalanche took the upper road. Tomas had gone over to fetch a ewe that had strayed, and when the wind dropped, Maud walked the pass every morning with a lantern and called his name until her voice cracked. She found his hat in March, nothing more. She has not let anyone touch the stone since, and she keeps the toll gate herself now, stamping each cart with a small crown she draws in the ledger.
This morning the thaw came, and I went up with her. Water was running out of both crowns, filling the carved lines so they glinted like new ink. She put her palm flat against his and laid her other hand on the south face, and neither of us said anything. I think the stone will outlast all of us, which is either a comfort or the cruellest joke the mountain has played. Write soon. Yours, Greta.
