Matching curled animals with flowers on calves
Dotwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
Two mirrored tattoos sit side by side on the calves, each showing a curled animal cradling a smaller animal, framed by flower blooms and leaves in an oval. The linework is built from fine stippling and hatching, giving an engraved, woodcut-like texture. The image is entirely black and grey, with the composition balanced symmetrically across both legs.

You reach the col just after the bell in the valley chapel has stopped, and the wind has already taken the last of the light off the scree. Your boots are wet through. Ahead, a fox has made a bed in the lee of the boulders, curled so tight her tail meets her nose, and under her chest something small breathes in quick, anxious pulses.

Your father used to say foxes don't keep young they can't feed, and you have carried that sentence over three passes like a stone in your pocket. Now the stone is warm, and the fox lifts her head only enough to show you her eyes. She does not run. Around the hollow the anemones have gone to seed, and their pale heads shiver on the stalks as if they would rather be anywhere else.
You take off your coat. It is an ugly thing, army wool that smells of the mule you sold in Tirano. You lay it at the edge of the stones, step back, and wait, which is the hardest part of any crossing and the only part your father ever taught well. The fox considers you for the length of three breaths. Then she draws her hind legs in, and the small creature's ribs slow beneath the edge of the wool.
By morning the snow has stopped and the valley is a sheet of white with the spire poking through. The fox is gone. In the hollow there is only your coat, a dint in the dry grass, and one anemone bloom folded shut against the cold, as if it had kept watch all night too.
