A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit nearer, and keep your hands off the lamp, because this is a story for the hours after the last bus, when the river sounds louder than it does by day. On the Tyne there were two ferrymen, Ada Rooke and her cousin Silas Penney, who had been tied to the same boat for forty years and claimed to hate every minute of it.

They made their promise on a wet Tuesday under the Swing Bridge, palms pressed flat together because the fog had swallowed the bells of St Anne's. Do us part, Silas said, meaning the weather, meaning the harbour master, meaning nothing much. Til death, Ada answered, and they laughed until the gulls lifted off the wall and scolded them for it.

Then Silas took a berth on a coaster bound for Rotterdam, and the ferry sat empty at its chain. Ada rowed alone every evening, oars resting across her knees when the tide was slack, calling his name toward the fog as though it were a lantern. The town said she was mad. She said only that a promise has two ends, and one of them is still in the water.

In the third winter a knock came across the black river, three slow raps on the hull. She lit the lamp and there he was, soaked and grinning, hauling himself up by the chain. They sat in the bottom of the boat with their hands locked together, and neither of them bothered to finish the sentence.
