Promise script tattoos on fingers

Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two fingers from interlocked hands each show the word promise in black cursive script. The lines are fine and even, with small variation in weight along the letterforms. The image is in black ink only, with a dim, warm light and a dark, blurred background of fabric.

Dear Nell,

The Bramley tree behind the cider shed has finally dropped the last of its fruit, so Dad has stopped threatening to chop it down. I have been picking up windfalls for three days and filling the wheelbarrow until my back complains. You will laugh, but I counted them, four hundred and twelve, and then Mum made me stop because the wasps had found the sugar bin.

I saw the paper you sent with the pressed Cox leaf tucked inside. I know you meant it kindly, asking whether I had settled on a word for the back of my hand, but I still think ink should only go on what you are sure of. The lads at the packing shed laughed when I said so. Dougie Hale said I was getting too serious for a girl with a bike and a bad reputation at the church fete. Let him laugh. He still owes me a tenner from the raffle.

The real news is that the Sunday market have asked Mum to take the stall in Leominster, and she said yes before anyone asked me. So the orchard is quiet now and the ladders are going back into the barn, one rung at a time, the way Granddad used to stack them. I think I will walk over to the old gate tonight and sit on the top bar until the light goes. Come down at Christmas if the trains behave. Bring the blue scarf. I will want to tell you properly then what we are going to do with all these apples.

All my love, Peg
