Matching finger bands with letter M and figure eight
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands rest on a patterned fabric, with the ring fingers showing matching tattoos. The left hand has a script-style letter M between two thin horizontal lines, and the right hand has a figure eight or infinity-like symbol framed the same way. The linework is fine and black, with no shading, and the image is in natural light with a shallow focus.

Dear Ada,

The snow has shut the road below Cold Fell for four days now, and the landlord has given up counting the guests. There are six of us in the back parlour, and the only thing anyone agrees on is that Mr Harker's cards are cheating. I sit by the range mending the rope we'll need when the thaw comes, working the figure-eight knots the way Father taught us, one loop passing through the next until it locks itself shut.
Mrs Pell, who keeps the inn, says the knot is the only honest thing a man can tie in bad weather, because it holds under strain and can always be undone by the one who made it. I told her she had been reading the almanac again. She laughed, and then she told me about her husband, who walked out to the byre in the blizzard of '09 with a lamp and a length of line, and came back holding only the rope. She did not say more, and I did not ask.
Last night the wind dropped and I took a lantern out to the gate. The stars were so sharp they seemed close enough to catch on the line. I thought of you, twelve miles off at the mill, and tied a figure eight into the gatepost rope for luck. Beside it I scratched an M, for Mill, though nobody else will know what it stands for.
When the cart comes up on Thursday, bring the spare lamp and the small scissors. I will be the one on the step, waving a rope like a fool.
Your loving sister, Nell
