Matching elephant trio tattoos on forearms
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two forearms show matching tattoos of three elephants walking in a line, decreasing in size from left to right. The linework is a thin, single-line outline with no shading, in black ink on light skin. Two people hold their wrists together in the frame, with only the lips and chin of one person visible and a polka dot top behind them.

The snow had come early over Haddon Gap, and by the third hour the track was gone beneath it. Ansel Huw walked at the front of the line with a lantern he did not need, because the old cow knew the way better than he did. Behind her came Bessie, then the little one the depot men called Pennyworth, each with her trunk curled to the tail of the animal in front, so that nobody had to shout to keep the line together.

At the shoulder of the pass a slab of ice had come away and cut the path in two. Ansel stood on the lip of it and felt the wind push grit down his collar. He thought of the lorries waiting at the depot, the men who said the herd should be sold for timber money, and the letter in his coat promising a bridge by spring. None of that meant anything to the animals. The old cow lowered her head, tested the drop with her trunk, then stepped onto the ledge as though someone had asked her politely.
Bessie followed. Pennyworth hesitated, her trunk still hooked to her mother's tail, and for a long moment the whole line hung on a single curl of grey skin over nothing. Ansel reached out and let the calf take his sleeve instead. She wound the tip of her trunk around the wool, leaned her weight into it, and hauled herself across.
On the far side the cloud broke and the valley opened below them, the lamps of Crane End coming on one by one. Ansel counted the animals in the frost on his notebook, then counted them again to be sure. They were still there both times, nose to tail, going down into the lamplight.
