Matching All My Love script on three wrists
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Three pairs of hands are held palm up, each showing the phrase All My Love in cursive script on the inner wrist. The left and right tattoos are crisp black linework, while the middle one looks much lighter and faded, possibly due to healing or a lighter ink. The soft, close composition keeps the three wrists in focus with the dark nail polish on the fingers at the top.

At the Long Marsh school, the teacher Miss Orrell kept a tin of iron-gall ink that she swore would only dry true for children who meant what they wrote. Three girls, Ada Penrose, Nell Quarry and Bet Harrow, sat on the back bench and passed notes every morning, each ending with the same three words, All my love, in a looping hand they had all copied from the same primer.

When the spring floods took the lower bridge, Nell's family moved to the coast and the notes stopped. Ada kept the last one pressed flat in her hymn book. Bet kept writing anyway, folding her notes into the pocket of a coat that no longer fit her, and each time she wrote the words the ink came out a little paler, until she could hardly tell whether she had written them at all.
Thirty years on, the school held its reunion in the old hall, with seed cake on trestle tables and a dented urn that would not stop hissing. Nell came up from the coast with a carrier bag of letters she had kept in a biscuit tin. The three of them sat in a row and turned their wrists up on the table, the way they had once held out their hands to be measured for a chalk line, and Ada read the old words aloud. Bet's line was barely there, and Nell said it had always been the honest one, since Bet had never once expected an answer.
In the vestry afterwards they found Miss Orrell's tin, still half full and sealed with wax. Ada tipped a drop onto a saucer, dipped a pen, and wrote the three words on a fresh card. She pressed it into Bet's palm. The ink went dark the moment it touched the paper, and none of them could say whether to laugh or cry.
