Three black linework tattoos of looping spirals and thin stems sit on two forearms and a wrist, with one design on each arm at a similar angle. The lines are fine and even, with small loops along a central stem that curls into a larger spiral at the top on the left arm. The photograph is warm toned with a plain background of a grey fabric and a tiled step.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had counted the steps of the north tower so many times that the number had stopped being a number and become a kind of weather in her head. Ninety-one turns, with the last six missing where the masonry had slumped into the moat before her grandmother was born. Her uncle Tobias swore there were ninety-seven, but he had only ever climbed it drunk, so she kept her own count in a length of waxed linen, tying a knot at every landing.

The knots made a line that looped and tightened as the stair coiled, each loop one turn she had taken with her palm flat against the cold stone. By the eighth knot the wind came through the arrow slit like a hand at her collar. The hall below was all bramble now, its roof gone, rooks nesting in the chimney breasts. Nobody climbed up here anymore except Nell and the gulls.

On the morning the surveyors arrived from Carlisle with their brass instruments and their talk of pulling the tower down for safety, she went up faster than she ever had. At the top the stair ended in a small open platform and a single iron ring, bent over at the end into a curl. She tied the linen to it, the knots running down the stair like the notes of a tune, and left the last loop unfinished, a spiral she could not quite close.

Below, the surveyor's boy stopped at the foot of the stair, looked up at the sky, and began to count.
