Matching feather and infinity shoulder tattoos

Fine line · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo

Two shoulders are shown side by side, each with a feather joined to an infinity loop that carries thin script lettering reading unbreakable friendship. The left tattoo is in black and grey with fine linework and soft shading on the feather, while the right has blue and teal shading in the feather. The photo is a close, slightly warm-toned phone shot with the subjects cropped at the shoulder and upper back.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Rain had been coming off the Trent since dawn, and Nell was still at the tiller when the heron feather landed on the cabin roof, grey and wet as a dishcloth. Neither of us spoke. We had been arguing for three locks about whether the Lowfield cut was a river or a ditch, and the feather settled it by sliding down the tin roof and catching in the gutter as if it had somewhere to be.

We had met on boats moored nose to tail at Thorne twenty-two years back, and we swore on a mooring pin that nothing would split us. We were nine. The oath was written in biro on the inside of a pickle jar lid, and we kept it in the tiller box under the spare windlass, where we pulled it out whenever one of us was sulking. The feather went in with it, pressed flat. Every time we came back to a lock we walked the towpath in a loop, out past the sluice and round the old mill, and returned to where we started, which Nell said was the whole point of a loop.

She took a job in Leeds that autumn and I stayed on the water. For a year her letters arrived at whatever lock I was tied up at, each one smelling faintly of diesel from the post van. Then one February the cut froze hard, and I walked out to the middle of it with the feather, meaning to give it to the ice. The surface cracked under my boot. The feather spun out of my fingers and went round in a small grey circle on the black water, and it kept coming back to the same spot, as though the ice had a loop of its own. I rang her from the lock-keeper's phone that evening. She answered on the first ring and said she had been walking the towpath too.
