Matching infinity and butterfly tattoos on upper backs
Fine line · Back · Mixed · Photo
Two people are shown from behind, each with a matching tattoo on the upper back. The design is an infinity symbol with a pink butterfly at one end, and small script sits inside the loop. The black linework is clean and the butterfly wings are filled with soft pink ink, while the lettering is too small to read clearly.

Dear Mavis, the ink took, though Mr Pryce at the back of the fairground stalls swore at me the whole time for holding still like a board. He drew the figure of eight on tracing paper first, round and round, until I told him to stop, then put a butterfly on the end of it, pink as a sugared almond because that was the only pot he had left.

You asked in your last letter what I meant by forever, and I said I'd write when I knew. I think forever is a lazy word for a thing that goes round the same loop and comes back to where it started. Mum used to say the mill whistle went on like that, eight hours, then eight again, and we never once heard it stop.
I've left the other half of the drawing with Alice at the chemist's. She has the same mark on her shoulder now, the girl who was never brave enough for needles. The lettering is so small nobody can read it, which suits us. Whatever it says is between the loop and the wing, and that's where it should stay.
Come home at Whitsun if the boat is kind. Bring the wrong shoes and the good tea, and tell Dennis the back step still wobbles. Your loving sister, Win.
