Matching feather tattoos on two wrists
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two pairs of hands with lilac nail polish are shown with a feather tattoo on each inner wrist. The left feather is smaller and mostly solid black, with a curled stem at the top, while the right feather is longer and uses fine linework and grey shading to show its barbs. The ink is entirely black and grey against a plain, light background.

Nell found the feather in the lining of her father's old coat on the last night at Hollin Meadow, folded into the seam like a letter nobody meant to send. It was black, a sliver of rook's wing, and when she tilted it toward the waltzer lights the grey along its edge showed up like smoke. Her sister Tess was already in the van, boots off, sorting coins from the goldfish stall into paper tubes.

"It's Dad's," Tess said, without looking up. "He used to tie them to the stall poles so the wind would tell him when to pack up."
Nell turned the feather over in the lamplight. Tess had always been the solid one, dark and quick to settle, while Nell was forever half off the ground and shedding things. The curled stem Dad had doodled on the back of a raffle ticket years ago still hung in the cupboard above the kettle, a little spiral that led nowhere, and Nell had never once asked him what it was for.
In the morning the field was only ruts and a drift of chip papers. Nell walked to the hedge where the wind came off the river and let the feather go. It spun once, caught the grey light, and lifted over the fence towards the road, following the caravans that were already heading south.
