Blue bird and leafy branch on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A small songbird perched on a branch with several leaves is tattooed in blue ink on the inside of a wrist. The linework is light and sketchy, with some soft shading in the bird's body and the leaves. The plain cream wall behind the raised fist keeps the focus on the tattoo.

Brother Anselm has taken the blue from the apothecary's jar again, and I will be the one blamed for the smell of it on the refectory cloths. Smalt, he calls it, ground from glass and cobalt, and it costs more than the goat we sold in March. I told him the abbot would notice. He told me the abbot notices nothing that is not written in Latin.

Still, I watched him work. He drew the bird first in lead, a small thing with its head tipped back as though it had heard its name called from the far end of the valley. Then he laid a branch beneath its feet, with leaves no bigger than my thumbnail. He never lifted the brush from the vellum. The strokes thinned where the breast turned toward the light and thickened under the wing, so that by evening the creature looked less painted than remembered.
The abbot came round at vespers and stood a long time over the page. I waited for the scolding. Instead he asked me to fetch the small bell from the cloister, and when I returned he had propped the leaf against the window so the blue caught the last of the sun. "It is only a songbird," he said, "but it has been singing in this margin for three hundred years, and nobody has once stopped to listen." Then he blessed the ink and left us to finish.
