Matching feather tattoos on wrist and foot
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two small feather tattoos sit on pale skin, one on the inner wrist and one on the top of the foot. The wrist piece is a solid black feather with a thin, curling stem ending in a spiral, drawn with fine linework. The foot piece is a more detailed feather with fine hatched shading along the barbs. Both are in black ink on a plain light background with soft, even lighting.

The tern came down on the foredeck the morning we lost sight of Ushant, and by noon Mrs Pardoe had the feather pinned under a tin cup on the chart table, as though it might blow off into the Bay of Biscay. It was grey on the underside and black where the light caught it, the vane split clean down the middle, and when Tom Lusk turned it over with a pencil he said it had been plucked, not moulted, because the quill was still wet at the root.

Nobody wanted to say what that meant. We had eleven days of westerlies behind us and the cook had started rationing the tinned peaches. Harriet, the second mate's girl who had come aboard at Falmouth to keep her father company, took the feather when no one was looking and carried it below in her sea boot. She came up that evening with a curl of copper wire wound round its stem, twisted into a tight spiral so it would hold its shape against the wind.
"For the trip home," she said, and tucked it into the rail beside my hand.
We raised the Scillies four days later under a sky the colour of pewter. Harriet's little spiral had gone green at the edges and the stem had snapped where the wire met the quill. I kept the feather in my oilskin pocket, and I still keep it there now, worn smooth as a pebble, because the girl had been right that it was a homecoming of a sort, and because the spiral, when I unfold it on the kitchen table in Penzance, still turns the way it did on the foredeck.
