Matching fine line crosses on wrists

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two small cross tattoos sit on the inner wrists, one on each arm, with the hands turned palm up. Each cross is drawn in thin black outline with looped, leaf-like curls at the arms and a single open loop at the top. The ink is solid black with no shading, and the crosses are placed at matching angles against plain skin and a light domestic background.

Dear Nell,

The rain has been coming sideways down the market since eight, so I am writing this under the tarpaulin with the tea going cold beside the tin trays. I found the offcut box under Dad's bench this morning. You know the one, with the cracked lid and the smell of paraffin. Inside were two crosses he must have cut the winter we stopped speaking about the shop, each no bigger than a thumbnail, thin as a leaf, with curls at the ends where the snips had turned the metal back on itself.

I held them up to the grey light and they were the same shape, only one leaned a degree further than the other, as if one had been drawn by a left hand. There was a note pinned to the box in his capitals: KEEP THEM TOGETHER. NOT TO BE SOLD. I thought it was about the till money, but the rain kept drumming and I started to think he meant something else, that the two of us were meant to be held at the same angle.

Then Mrs Okafor from the fish stall came over with her umbrella dripping and asked if they were for sale, and I nearly said yes just to be done with it. Instead I put them in my pocket and I am writing to tell you that I have decided to post you the one with the longer loop. Keep it where you can see it. I will keep mine where I can see mine. Come home at Easter if the roads allow it. The kettle is on the left and the box is under the bench, where it has always been.

Love, Maddie
