Black leaf cross tattoo on an ankle
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of a stylised cross formed from four elongated leaf or petal shapes, with two small curls at the centre. The lines are solid black with a little internal shading on the leaves, and the design sits alone on pale skin. The dark background and soft framing keep the focus on the motif.

The knife is still warm from the whetstone when Mnasos passes it across the trestle, and you have about one breath before the cutting in your palm begins to droop. Four shoots, he says, no more. Lay them in a cross over the stock so every leaf faces a wind, then bind with flax you have soaked in vinegar. Your hands want to hurry. His do not, and so you slow yourself to match them.

The grove above Teuchos has been losing trees since the lightning took the old fig in the spring. The stranger who came up the track with a mule and a bag of salt did not haggle over the price. He only asked whether the graft would take quickly, and whether the leaves would open before the frost. Mnasos said it would take if the grafter kept her thumbs off the join. You kept your thumbs off. You also watched the stranger's hands, which kept returning to the edge of a cloth bundle tied behind the mule's saddle.
Two days later the stranger comes back on foot. He stands at the edge of the new row and says nothing for a long while. Then he unties the cloth and lays a small bronze cup at the foot of the young tree, and you see that someone has scratched a cross of four leaves into its rim, with two curls at the centre where the lines meet.
The graft has taken. Four shoots have opened in four directions, and in the middle the bark has curled tight around the wound like a closed fist. You do not tell him you have never seen a fig bear leaves so early. You only press the bronze cup deeper into the soil, where the roots will find it first.
