Matching forearm lettering with insignia
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two forearms are shown, each with a black tattoo pairing a solid black circular emblem with a short phrase. The upper arm reads I love you in a clean sans-serif, and the lower arm reads I KNOW in bold, heavier lettering. The ink is solid black with crisp edges, and the photograph is taken at a close angle against a neutral background.

Dear Ivy, the runner beans have finally gone over and Harold has declared it a harvest, which I am disputing from the shed door with a trowel in my hand. You will remember he never once lost an argument at the Thursday seed swap, so I am putting this down in ink in case he tries to claim the last word again.

The shed is where the trouble started, if forty years of notes can be called trouble. Every seed tray sold by the Hollin Growers' Circle carries the same black stamp, a disc with a wing sweeping across it, and I used to tuck a slip of paper under the trays with I love you written across the bottom. Harold never once said it back out loud. He wrote I know beneath it in capitals, pinned it to the cross beam where the twine hangs, and went off to weed the onions as though he had settled something.
This morning there was a tray on the bench I had not filled. Under the stamp, in the careful hand he keeps for labels, he had written I know, and beneath that, smaller, the words I have been waiting forty years to read in his writing: Plant the marrows in the north bed, love. I have planted them. They are already sulking in the cold, but they are in.
So you can tell Harold the marrows are a harvest in the making, and that I was right about the beans. He can have the last word on the beans. I will keep the one on the cross beam.
