Matching horse head in heart tattoos on forearms
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two forearms show near-identical tattoos of a horse head in profile, with the heart shape formed by the outline of the horse's neck and head. The linework is thin, black and even, with no shading, and the design is shown in a plain black ink against the skin. The two arms sit close together against a dark background, so both tattoos are shown clearly and at the same scale.

Put that bucket down, Tom, and listen, because I'll not tell this twice and the mare's already eyeing your coat. Hexham market, the spring my knees still worked. Two sisters came up the lane with one pound forty between them and a grey mare their father had left them, having drunk the rest of the farm first.

Nell was the elder and could ride anything with a pulse. Ada could not sit a saddle to save her life, but she could talk a frightened horse down off a hedge. They had argued over that mare, Duchess, for a week, Nell wanting her sold for the rent and Ada wanting her kept, and the argument had worn a groove in both of them. On the Thursday they came to my pen and stood with their forearms pressed together, the way folk do when they have nothing else to hold, and I saw the mare had turned her head between their wrists. Her neck and jaw curved up over their two arms and made a heart around them, neat as a stamp.
I offered forty guineas, which was fair money. Nell reached for the coin. Ada only said, ask her. So I did, and the mare put her nose into Ada's palm and stayed there. Nell laughed the way a person laughs when she has lost and knows it, and that was the end of the selling.
They rode her home together for twenty years, one in the saddle and one walking at the bridle. Next time you see them, they'll show you the horse inked on their arms, one each, same line, same heart. Don't ask which of them drew it. They'll both tell you it was the mare, and I've never once been able to prove them wrong.
