Matching geometric tattoos on two shoulders

Geometric · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

The photo shows the bare backs and shoulders of two people with long hair, turned away from the camera. Each shoulder carries a black, faceted geometric design that mirrors the other, and together the two halves form one symmetrical shape. The tattoos are rendered in fine, hatched black linework with no shading or colour, against soft, muted skin tones and a plain pale background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Tom, the last of the Honister slate came down on the cart this morning, and Mr Hebden has finally agreed to let me take the two halves of the split block you wanted to see. I have wrapped them in sacking and set them by the back door, where the frost can't get at the seams.

The block split the way good slate does, clean along the grain, and when I laid the faces together they matched like a folded page. Every cleavage line ran the same way on both halves, so the hatched cuts I made with the point and the chisel for the sill outline came out as mirrors. Mother would have called it a lucky hand. I call it the grain doing what it was always going to do, if somebody bothers to listen to it.

Nell at the chapel school has asked for one half for her teacher's desk, and I have said yes, though the thought of parting them makes my fingers shake worse than the cold. Mr Hebden says a split block is only one stone that changed its mind. Perhaps. I have kept the smaller piece for myself, and I'll carve your initials on its underside once you send me the address of the new house in Ohio, so I know where to aim the post.

Write soon. Set side by side on the sill in the evening light, the two halves look like a bird with its wings lifted, as if it has just decided which way to fly and is waiting for the other half of itself to agree.
