The lens workshop at Scarrow Quay smells of rouge and cold tallow, and you have been told twice this week to stop breathing on the glass. Mr Helder Pask slides a sheet of tracing paper across the bench, a lotus pricked out in pinholes, every petal built from triangles that refuse to meet at their edges. "Stipple it," he says. "Don't draw it. The light will do the drawing."

For three nights you work by the paraffin lamp, tapping tiny facets into the blank prism with a diamond-tipped point, one dot at a time, until grey shadow pools inside each petal like water settling in a folded leaf. The fishermen's wives climb the hill to watch through the window and say nothing. Pask checks your work with a loupe and a sniff. On the third night the fog rolls in thick enough to swallow the breakwater light, and somewhere out past the rocks a boat is calling for a beam nobody can see.

You fit the finished ring into the lantern frame without looking at the sea. When the lamp turns, the lotus throws its petals across the water in soft grey wedges, sharp at the points and blurred where your dots lie thickest. A rowing boat swings toward them, then another, and the crews find the harbour mouth by the shapes they know.

In the morning the tracing is folded into your coat pocket. Pask has pricked one extra hole through the centre petal, and when you hold it to the window the light comes through it as a single bright point.
