Black mandala tattoo on the ribs
Blackwork · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A large black mandala with ornate scrollwork and dotwork shading sits on the side of the torso, with diamond-shaped motifs radiating outward. A smaller black arrow with curled detailing sits lower near the waistband, and black lace lingerie frames the composition. The image is in black ink only, with crisp linework and stippled shading across the mandala.

The lock-keeper's daughter at Hollin Weir had a habit of drawing on the wet flagstones with a stick of lime, and by the time the barges came through on Thursday the whole lock chamber was ringed with her circles. Her mother called them nonsense. The bargemen called them luck. Nell only drew what she saw in the water when the sluice gates lifted: spokes of light fanning off the surface, lace of weed turning slow beneath it, and always, at the centre, a small hard star that shifted when you looked away from it.

The summer the Marigold came up the cut with a cargo of Yorkshire slate, a deckhand named Tobias Rudd stood on the lock beam and watched her finish a circle with a flourish that doubled back on itself. He asked what it was for. She said it was the shape the river made when it was deciding whether to let a boat pass. He laughed, then didn't, because the gates were already groaning open and the water was rising in exactly that pattern, rings folding inward toward a dark centre.
He came back every fortnight after that with a new reason to moor. By October the lime circles had become a language between them, arrows scratched beside them pointing downstream, diamonds for safe water, a curl for the shallows below the weir. The last thing she ever drew for him was an arrow with its tail caught in a spiral, pointing towards the far bank. He took the chalk from her hand, pressed it to his own palm, and carried the lock's old mark out of the county with him, a small dark signal he never once let the rain wash off.
