A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The brass lamp hung off the tailgate of the van was the only light in the lane, and Ruth had maybe twenty minutes before the gloss went tacky. Her brother Dev held the tin of black enamel steady while she worked the last full stop, pressing the brush down slowly so it wouldn't bleed into the grain of the board.

"Mum says upright on the gate, sideways on the boat," he said. "So whoever comes up the towpath reads it straight, and whoever's stood on the back deck reads it the other way round."

"She always did like things that worked from both ends." Ruth wiped her thumb on a rag. Their father had painted the original signs in this same serif, with the same fat-bellied o, and she had learned her letters from the side of his van long before she learned to drive it.

Behind them the narrowboat sat low in the cut, its roof beaded with rain, one window lit where someone had left the kettle on. Nobody had lived aboard since February. Dev counted the letters under his breath the way their dad used to, and the lamp hissed and steadied.

"Right," Ruth said, and laid the brush across the tin. The gate board would dry by morning. They would hang it at first light, once the bread van from Hollin's had rattled past and the ducks were still asleep on the lock, so that the word faced anyone who came up the path.
