The envelope took eleven days to cross, and I have read the postmark three times as if it might have changed its mind. Mum has given your room to the lodger, a retired postman called Mr Idris who whistles hymns over the washing. The ferry timetable is still pinned to the kitchen door where you left it, and I have not moved it.

Here is the news. The map you drew on the back of the feed merchant's calendar is framed above the stove now. You put the top corner in wrong, you always did, and I haven't corrected it. Dad's old pencil lies on the windowsill beside it with the little star you made the night before you left, the one marking the harbour where the last boat went out. Mum says the star is a lie because you were never coming back to that harbour, but she still dusts it on Thursdays.

The curl at the bottom is the bit I keep thinking about. You said the word had to bend back towards the coast so it wouldn't run off the edge of the paper. I hope you have found somewhere the word fits you the way that curl fits the shoreline. Write when the post is decent, and tell me what the sea looks like from wherever you are standing.
