Matching 'to infinity and beyond' wrist tattoos

Fine line · Other · Mixed · Photo

Two wrists are shown side by side, each with a thin script tattoo. The left wrist reads 'to' followed by an infinity symbol in blue, and the right wrist reads 'and beyond' in blue, with the end of 'beyond' and a pair of small birds in red. The linework is fine and even, and the soft, blurred background keeps the focus on the ink.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You and Maeve had one rule on the harbour wall: whoever left first wrote the course on the slate by the ticket hut, and whoever stayed chalked the reply. The island boat ran at seven, and this morning it was your turn to board, so Maeve held the chalk while you watched her write "to" in looping letters, then stop and draw a sideways eight that the wind had already started smudging.

"Not finished," she said. "You write the rest." You took the chalk and wrote "and beyond" along the slate, but the board ran out before the last letter, so the d curled down over the edge like a loose bit of rope. Two terns lifted off the breakwater and wheeled above the moored boats, and you counted them the way your grandfather taught you, one for luck and one for the sea that would bring you back.

The horn sounded. Maeve didn't walk you to the gangway. She stood by the bollards with chalk dust on her palms and her sleeves pushed to the elbow, the way she always did when she was pretending not to cry, and she called out that the tide table was wrong again and you were to fetch her a proper one from the mainland.

Four months later the slate had gone to the scrapyard and the hut had a new tenant with a transistor radio, but the boat still docked at seven. You came up the ramp with your bag and heard her before you saw her, calling the last word across the water as if the tide had carried it in. The chalk had long since washed off the stone, yet the whole line was there in her hand, and above the final letters she had drawn two small birds, both facing the same way.
