Love script with heart on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small black script word reading Love followed by three dots and a small outlined heart, tattooed along the side of a finger. The lettering uses thin, even linework with a single solid black ink tone. The hand rests on a white fabric surface, with pink nail polish visible on the adjacent finger.

The boat leaves Lowestoft before the gulls are awake, and you are the one who writes on the wheelhouse slate, because your hand is steadier than the skipper's in the cold. You chalk the tide times in neat columns, then the weather, then, without quite deciding to, a single word you have been carrying since the last trip out: Love. You stop there. Three small dots follow, the way your nan ended every note she left by the kettle, as if the rest of the sentence was too obvious to bother with.

Dennis, who has hauled nets for forty winters, reads the slate over his tea and says nothing, which from Dennis is a speech. The engine thrums up through the deck planks. Hours pass in the grey roll of the North Sea, the trawl coming up heavy with plaice and a tangle of weed, and you work the sorting table with your sleeves pushed back, thinking about the woman on the quay who always brings a flask and a question. You never let her finish the question. You have always told yourself the answer is obvious.

Off the Dogger Bank the wind backs round and the sky turns the colour of wet slate. Somebody shouts, a rope runs, and for a minute the whole crew moves as one animal in the spray. When the boat finally noses back through the harbour mouth, you look up at the wheelhouse. Someone has wiped the board clean, the way crews do, but the chalk has ghosted into the grain, and a small heart outline still shows beside the faint word, half-erased. Dennis is leaning on the rail. He lifts a hand, not quite a wave, and you understand that he is asking you the question now.
