Matching infinity quote tattoos on forearms
Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two forearms show matching tattoos of a looping infinity-shaped quote in thin, flowing script, mirrored so one reads upside down from the other. The lettering is mostly black with fine, clean linework, and the word LOVE is filled in blue for contrast. The two arms sit side by side against a plain background, so the text is the main focus of the composition.

Nell Tregarthen had painted names on the sterns of boats for thirty years, and she could letter backwards without thinking, which was why the window of the chandlery on Quay Street fell to her. The owner wanted a quote in gold leaf, looped round on itself like a figure eight lying on its side, so it would read true from the street. 'Mind the mirror,' he said. 'Everything comes out the wrong way round on the glass.'

She worked three days on the loop. The word LOVE she painted in a deep blue, the only colour on the whole pane, because the old man's wife had once lettered the harbour signs and had told Nell that a single true word should stand out from the rest. Each evening the tide came up under the slipway and Nell sat on an upturned crate inside the shop and read the line through the glass, mirrored, the words running backwards out over the dark water.
On the last morning a girl stopped on the pavement with a carrier bag and read the window from outside. Nell watched her through the gold lettering, lips moving, trying the phrase one way and then the other until it made sense. Mother's love is forever, the girl read at last. Then she walked round to the far end of the pane, where the letters ran the other way, and read it again from that side too.
When the glass was finished Nell wiped her hands on a rag and found a thumbprint smeared in gold at the corner. She left it where it was. Somebody would always be reading that line from the other side, and the gold would hold whichever way they stood.
