Matching family silhouette and quote forearm tattoos
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two forearms show matching black silhouettes of a woman holding the hands of two children, with a line of script beside each group of figures. The silhouettes are solid black fill with smooth edges, and the script has even, dark strokes. The ink is entirely black and grey on warm skin, photographed against a plain, softly lit background.

The wind had got into the big top's guy ropes by four o'clock, and Dolly Frane stood at the foot of the pole with her chalk-dusted slippers in one hand, deciding whether the wire was still hers to walk. Behind the wagons her girls were playing jacks in the sawdust, Peg and little Lou, too young yet to know what a wind like that could do.

The manager, Mr Oakes, wanted the act cancelled and the money returned. Dolly said the people in the stands had come in their Sunday coats and would not thank him for sending them home. She climbed the ladder with the balance pole, which weighed nearly as much as Lou, and felt the wire shiver under her soles like a plucked string.
Halfway across she made the mistake everyone warned her about and looked down. The crowd was a pale smear. But the lamps threw her shadow up across the canvas, and beside it, from where the girls had run to stand at the ring's edge, two small shadows reached up and joined hands. She had taught them that trick over the winter: keep the line of your arms straight, and walk toward the thing you love most.
She reached the far platform with the wind pulling at her hair, and when the drum roll stopped she heard Lou shouting her name as if it were something to hold onto. Dolly never told Mr Oakes she had been frightened. She told the girls the wire had been easy, and they believed her, which was the easiest part of the whole evening.
