Matching Japanese flower tattoos on both calves

Japanese · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

The photo shows the backs of a pair of legs with a mirrored Japanese style design on each calf. Each motif has a flower head at the top, layered flame or cloud shapes, and fine parallel wave lines running down toward the ankle. The work uses bold black outlines with hatched and stippled shading, and the studio setting is dimly lit with shelves and a stool in the background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The two carriers reached the salt flats at Kessan Wells with one goat between them and a single jar of water they had been rationing since the last well dried up. Tomas said the road bent north after the third cairn. Ilse said it bent south, and they had argued about it for four days, which was why they were now standing in the glare while the goat lay down and refused to get up.

Past the third cairn an old woman sat beside a pool no wider than a cart. Pale lotus stood up out of the water, and a thin smoke rose from the petals though there was no fire anywhere. She said the water was not for drinking. It was for the one who would turn back for the other. Ilse asked what that meant, and the woman only pointed at the shimmer on the road ahead, where the air rippled like a lake that was never there.

Tomas took the jar from his pack and pressed it into Ilse's hands. He said the goat would die anyway and she had the longer walk. She argued, then took it, because arguing was thirsty work. She carried the jar through a day and a night, pouring a mouthful at each cairn, until the road finally bent north as Tomas had said. She found him sitting in the wind with the goat's rope still knotted round his wrist. The sand had been combed by the gusts into fine lines, running down the dune towards him like tide, and she could not remember now which of them had been right.
