Matching King and Queen crown wrist tattoos
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Two inner wrists are pressed together, each carrying a black script word with a small crown above it: Queen on the left and King on the right. The lettering uses smooth, flowing linework with bold strokes and the crowns are simply drawn in solid black ink. The photo is taken close up in soft light against grey fabric, with the pair of tattoos centred in the frame.

The ferry from Lowestoft had been gone two days when Ada Brisk decided our passes were worth more as ink than as paper. The checkpoint at the Thames barrier read faces against a ledger, and paper could be forged, but a hand that had been marked for years was harder to fake. So she sat me on an upturned crate in the hold, warmed a sewing needle over the lamp, dipped it in soot, and worked two words into our skin: Queen for her, King for me, each with a small crown above, as if the crowns were the only part the guards needed to see.

The guard at the barrier was a boy no older than the lamp he carried. He read our wrists longer than he read our papers. Nobody had printed the old rhyme on the back of the passes since the water came, but he must have learned it somewhere, because he murmured it under his breath: a queen can hold the tide, and a king can row the boat home. Ada laughed, the boy laughed too, and the gate groaned upward on its chains.
On the far side the marsh was all reeds and grey light. We walked three miles before either of us spoke. Then Ada pushed up her sleeve, rubbed at the smudged Queen with her thumb, and said the ink had faded more than she'd hoped. "Good," I said. "Then we'll have to be remembered some other way." She looked at me for a long time, and then she took my hand.
