Priya is already sitting on the concrete by the fire door, her back against the cold steel and a biro tucked behind one ear. "You're late," she says, not looking up from the paper on her knees. "And the green one's still wrong."

You sit down beside her and smooth the sketch flat. Two hilts, drawn from the grey plastic of the toy she bought off the market for a pound, the one that snapped at the join when you both tried to stop it hitting the ceiling of her mum's kitchen. Two blades. Hers is pink and solid all the way to the tip, because she is staying, she says, and somebody on this estate has to keep the lights on. Yours is green, and you have drawn it fading out, thinner and thinner, until it almost stops being there.

"It looks like it's running out of battery," she says. "That's not a blade, that's a sad little torch."

"It's meant to fade," you tell her. "That's where the light goes when you stop looking at it."

She snorts and takes your wrist, turns it over, and begins to draw on the soft skin with the biro, pressing hard at the hilt and lighter as the line runs out. The ink drags and blurs where your skin is warm. When she lets go, the green blade trails off into nothing, and she looks at it for a long time before she says, "Fine. Keep it. September, then."
