Matching faith fish tattoos on feet

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

Two feet rest on a blue leather surface, each showing a matching black outline of a fish with the word faith written in script across it and the reference Heb 11:1 in small lettering below. The linework is thin and even, with the script and fish outline in simple single lines and no shading. The tattoos are the same size and placed in the same position on each foot, with toenails painted blue.

Mirrel had mended nets on the shingle at Ossory Bay since she was tall enough to reach the gunwales, and she knew the lake the way her mother knew bread, by feel and not by looking. So when the spring gales came down off the hills and kept the boats drawn up for nine days, she was the one who walked out before dawn to see what the water had left.

Her brother Dathan trusted only knots. He tied a hazel fish to the mast of his coracle to keep the boat steady in a blow, and when Mirrel carved a second from the same grey wood, he laughed and said she would drown wearing a toy. She tied hers to her ankle with waxed thread instead. The old women at the smokehouse said a fish carried on the body keeps the body where it belongs, and Dathan said the old women had never been out on the lake in March.

On the tenth morning the nets came up empty three times running. Dathan swore and wanted to row for the far shore where the wind was kinder. Mirrel stepped off the stones into water that bit to the knee and said, to nobody but the grey light, that the fish were there, that the thing you cannot see is still the thing you are standing on. She had no idea where the words came from. Her brother watched her stand there so long that he climbed out of the boat to stand beside her.

The net came up so heavy they had to haul it between them, silver and thrashing, and Dathan cried out like a boy. That night the two carved fish hung drying on one nail above the hearth, the same size and the same weight, and neither of them wanted to be the one to take theirs down.
