Matching Like Mother and Like Daughter script tattoos
Lettering · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
Two matching script tattoos sit on skin, one reading Like Mother near the upper back and one reading Like Daughter on a shoulder below it. The black linework is fine and flowing, with looped capitals, trailing swashes and three small heart-shaped dots after each phrase. The image is entirely black and grey against a pale background, with soft natural light and the tattoos filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The queue at the Dover ferry terminal had stopped moving twice before Marguerite thought to take her daughter's passport out of the plastic sleeve. Ines, nineteen and sulking under a grey hood, had already told her the officer would not care about a tattoo. Marguerite had told her the officer did not need to see it. Both of them knew that was a lie, because the thing had been the whole argument since the parlour in Peckham, where the artist had traced the words in pencil first and turned the paper so they could read them backwards in the mirror.

At the booth, the officer asked where they were headed and for how long. Marguerite said a week, to see her sister in Lille, and the officer glanced at the two of them, the same dark brows, the same way of holding a bag by the strap. Then the officer's eyes went to Ines's shoulder, where the strap had slipped, and the ink showed under the collar. Like Daughter, it said, with its three small hearts trailing off the end like crumbs. The officer smiled, the first real smile of the morning, and waved them through.
On the far side of the barrier, Ines pulled her hood down and rubbed at the skin with her thumb as if it might come off. Marguerite did not tell her that her own Like Mother sat just as high on her back, under a jumper, where nobody ever looked unless they were close enough to be family. She simply took her daughter's hand, the way she had not done since Ines was small, and they walked out into the grey French light together.
