The dredger had sat in the silt of the Ouse drain since Tuesday, its bucket raised like a hand asking a question, and Ada Lark would not let the men winch it free until she had finished arguing with her sister. Nell stood on the bank with her arms folded, the way she had stood at their mother's funeral, and said the pump house was not worth saving. Ada said it was the last working lock between Ely and the sea, and that was the end of the sensible part of the conversation.

Nobody had ever called the Larks sensible. Their father kept an eel trap and a tin of seeds he swore had come from a Bengal merchant who never paid his bill, and every spring he planted them in the drain. Every spring the mud took them. "Mud is where they come from," he used to say, tapping three fingers down the lock gate, one, two, three, where he had painted little stepping dots in white. "Bloom in filth, come out clean."
Nell stopped arguing when the sun came over the reeds and a single pink bud split the water beside the dredger's track. Neither of them mentioned it. Ada climbed down the bank in her wellingtons, knelt in the cold, and pressed the bud under with one finger until it held its own weight.
They worked the sluice until dark, two pairs of muddy hands on one iron wheel, counting the turns out loud the way their father had. When the water finally lifted over the sill, the drain smelled of rain and rot and something sweet underneath, and Nell laughed for the first time since the funeral, with mud to her elbows and her sister's shoulder pressed against hers.
