Mirrored mandala across both feet
Dotwork · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A symmetrical mandala of layered petal shapes is tattooed across the ankles and tops of both feet, with each half mirroring the other. The design combines bold outlines with fine stippled dotwork shading that builds depth in the petals and central rings. The tattoo is rendered entirely in black and grey ink against a dark green background, with the feet shown from above.

The customs officer at the Vranov crossing lifts the first panel and holds it against the strip light, and you watch the grey dots of thread swell and thin like frost on a windowpane. It is a square of linen the size of a dinner plate, petals fanning out from a centre so fine it looks breathed onto the cloth. He asks what it is. You tell him it is a flower, which is true, and that your aunt stitched it over one winter in Olomouc, which is also true, though you leave out that she stitched its partner the winter after, in a flat above a bakery in Linz.

He folds the linen along its central line, the way you were taught to fold it in the back room of the workshop, and the two edges meet with no gap at all. For a long moment he says nothing. Behind him a dog shakes itself dry against the barrier and a lorry idles with its lights on. Then he unfolds the cloth, smooths the creases with the side of his hand and asks whether the other half is in the car. You say it is sewn into the lining of your coat, where it has been since Linz, and he laughs and waves you on, because a mirror, he says, is not contraband. It is only a pair that someone has been unwilling to separate.
