Matching lotus tattoos on two fingers

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands rest together, each with a small lotus tattoo on the side of a finger. The lotus outlines are drawn in fine black linework with a row of tiny dots above the petals. The ink is black only, and the simple composition is centred on the fingers against a wooden floor and patterned fabric.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lampblack was still warm from the lamp when Senna took my hand across the barge rail, and I let her, because the Nile was loud enough to cover a girl's foolishness. We were nine years old, and the ferryman's wife had told us that a lotus opens only where the water runs clean. Senna had spent the week splitting reeds for the scribe in Waset, and she had news that she would not say aloud.

She drew the first flower on my middle finger with a reed cut to a point, petals first, then a row of small dots she said were dew caught before sunrise. I drew hers in return. The black sat on the skin like a wet seed. My mother would have beaten us both for wasting good lampblack, but the scribe's pots were the one thing nobody counted.

The scribe was selling her to a household upriver, and the boat would leave at the next flood. We agreed, sitting on the wharf, that a lotus closes at dusk and opens at dawn, so whoever woke first would look at her own finger and know the other was still breathing somewhere on the water.

The flood came in the month of harvest. Senna was taken upriver before the light, and I woke to a grey sky and sat on the planks with my hand flat against the wood. The petals had blurred a little from washing, but the dots still held. When the reed boats came back down, I raised my hand toward the sun and waited for the flower to do what it always did, which was to open again, slowly, from the centre outward.
