Owl tattoo on a finger
Dotwork · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small owl sits upright on the side of a finger, with bold dark outlines around its feathered wings and head and large round eyes. The body is filled with stippled dots that fade toward the lower part of the bird, giving it soft shading. The plain grey-blue fabric behind the hand keeps the focus on the tattoo.

The pawnbroker on Lantern Row shuts at nine, but Mr Abernethy never bolts the side door until the last tram has rattled past the gasworks. You knock twice, the way he taught you, and he lets you in without a word, blinking at the rain on your collar. His shop smells of paraffin and old wool. On the counter a tin owl with glass eyes watches the till as if it might bolt.

You unwrap the handkerchief. Inside is a thimble your grandmother carried through two wars, its dimples worn smooth by a thumb that is buried now in Anfield. Abernethy holds it under the lamp for a long time. He does not offer you money. He asks whether you still hear the bells at St Chad's when the wind comes from the east, and you say yes, every night, and he nods as though that settles something.
He slides a ledger across and tells you to sign for it. When you look up, the owl has turned its head, the way owls do when a mouse stirs in the grass behind the counter. Abernethy laughs. Thirty years, he says, and that bird has never once looked at the door.
You leave with the thimble in your coat pocket and the ticket folded in your palm. The city has gone quiet except for the gulls on the chimneys, and the lamps along Lantern Row throw small gold circles on the wet stones. You walk home counting the streetlights, the way you used to count the owls on the allotment fence when you were small enough to be carried.
