Matching lotus tattoos on two forearms

Botanical · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two forearms are held together with the hands clasped, and each forearm carries a black lotus flower tattoo near the wrist. The flowers are shaded in black and grey with layered petals and visible tonal detail. The pale background and soft lighting keep the focus on the two matching designs.

Brother Anselm had kept the lily pond behind the cloister for forty winters, and he told the novices that every lotus had a sister somewhere in the world, though most never met her. Two seeds, he said, dropped from the same seedhead at the same moment, one carried by the wind over the wall and the other left in the mud at the bottom of the pond. They grew apart, one in the grey light of the valley and one in the green water, and each spent years pushing up through what covered it.

The novice Tomas did not believe him. He had a sister in the town below, a seamstress who sent letters on the Thursday carrier, and she had never once written about flowers. But in the spring the monks had to drain the pond to clear the silt, and in the grey mud they found a seed pod split open with a second seed inside it, sprouted and pale, its root wrapped around a shard of blue glass. Anselm held it up to the window and laughed at himself for being moved.

They planted the seedling beside the one that had grown over the wall, and by midsummer the two stood side by side, leaves touching across the gap in the stones. Tomas wrote to his sister that week and told her what he had found. She wrote back on Thursday with a single line: the glass in the mud was from the bottle she had broken on the day they walked home from the chapel, and she had kept the other half on her windowsill ever since.
