Matching musical stave tattoos on fingers
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are clasped together, each with a matching tattoo of a musical stave with notes wrapping around a finger. The linework is thin and dark, with solid note heads and small curved tails, and the tattoos are set against pale skin. The image is in colour but the ink is black, and the close framing keeps the fingers and tattoos at the centre.

The colliery band rehearsed on Thursdays in the old pithead baths, where the damp came up through the floorboards and the euphonium never quite sat in tune. Nell Pritchard had stopped noticing the cold years ago. What she noticed was Dai Morgan tapping the score with his pencil, as if the crotchets might wander off the page if he looked away from them.

The stave had been inked on their fingers the spring after the pit closed, a fortnight before the Whit parade. Dai wanted something that would outlast a brass band contest. Nell said a ring would only snag in the valves, so they climbed the stairs above Mrs Hughes's chip shop to see a man with a tray of needles and a bottle of ink he kept under the sink. He wound five lines around each of their middle fingers and let the quavers tumble down towards the knuckle, and it stung less than Dai pretended it did.
Since then they had argued over every bar of the test piece, the same way they argued over the kettle and the last of the coal money. On the night before the Glynfach contest, Nell found the score left open on the kitchen table, Dai's pencil crowding the margins. At the foot of the final page he had written a line of rests with no notes at all, and beside it, in square capitals: FOR THE SILENCE AFTER.
At the contest they played the piece through under the low hall lights. When the last phrase came, Nell lifted her cornet, held the stillness for the full count, and felt the whole village breathe out through the tiled walls.
