Matching finger ring tattoos on clasped hands

Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are clasped with interlaced fingers, and each visible finger carries a black ink band tattoo. The designs combine swirling linework with a heart and a star, and the solid black ink sits crisply against the skin. The composition is close and centred on the hands, with a dark blue fabric behind them.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The honeysuckle has come through the trellis again, and you stand at the wire with secateurs while Marguerite from the allotment next door tells you the whole run is a lost cause. You ignore her. The two of you planted that knot of stems the spring the orchard flooded, and every year it finds a new way to wind itself round the gate post.

Tomas, who ran the glasshouse at Hollin Court before the council shut it, used to say a knot is only a promise if both ends keep pulling. He drew the design for you both on the back of a seed packet: a heart pierced by a five-pointed star, with a swirl running round it like a tendril looking for something to hold. You took that packet to a shop on Gilbert Street and came home with the same drawing pricked into your skin, and he laughed until he had to sit down on the step.

The seed packet lives in the biscuit tin now, under the spare keys, and the gate has rusted half shut. You work the blades along the stem slowly, unpicking the loops instead of cutting them, because he was right about that too. Cutting through a knot saves an afternoon and costs you the reason you tied it.

When the last loop finally gives, the honeysuckle drops into your palm in one long curl, still green at the heart. You wind it twice round your wrist and walk it down to the gate, where the post stands bare and the gap is wide enough to let a person through, and you find you are glad there is still something left to hold.
