Matching mr and mrs finger tattoos
Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are shown close up, each with a small black script tattoo on a finger, one reading mr and the other mrs. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black. The tight framing sits on the fingers against soft, warm, blurred background tones.

The boats came in on the ebb that spring, and Morwenna Tull still had tar under her nails when she asked Joss Carrow to hold out his hand. He thought she wanted to see a cut. Instead she dipped a blunt needle in lamp soot and wrote a small word across the first knuckle of his finger, then did the same to her own, the letters running low and rolling like the swell past the harbour wall.

Joss went to sea every morning after that, and every morning the old men on the quay told him the sea was hungry. In October the Ellen Mary went down off Gull Rock with four men aboard. Joss was the only one who came home, though he had been the first over the side. The villagers said the sea had taken its share and then given him back, because it could not read what was written on him. Morwenna said nothing about this. She only kept the mending tin on the sill where the wind could not reach it.
The women of Porthkerris said the sea reads only what lies in a straight line, and that a wave will break on any word that bends. So when the children asked why the two of them wore the same small mark, Joss told them it was a plain word and a plain promise, and that the water had never once managed to read it.
Every night after that they set their hands side by side on the kitchen table so the two words sat in one line, and the lamp made them look like a single thread. The sea, which had no patience for anything it could not follow to the end, went on to other boats.
