Matching ornate giraffe tattoos on two ankles
Traditional · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
Two feet are shown side by side on a dark textured surface, each with a matching giraffe head tattoo on the ankle or heel area. The giraffe heads are decorated with floral motifs, mandala-like patterns, braided lines and dotwork shading, with bold outlines. The ink is black and grey, and the composition is close and evenly lit, with the two designs mirrored.

In the kingdom of Harrowmere-on-Sel, the royal tailors had one unbroken rule: no beast was stitched twice. Nell Sarrow broke it the winter the Chancellor wanted two giraffes for the Lantern Gate, one hung on each side of the road, so that travellers would meet the same long-necked creature whichever way they came. The animals had arrived by ship from the southern markets, and nobody in Harrowmere had seen one alive.

Her cousin Ysolde ground the ink from oak galls and lamp soot and took the frame opposite. They worked mirror-fashion, each reversing the other's pattern, so the flowers bloomed on the left cheek of one beast and the right cheek of the other. Nell drew the mandala crown first, petal by petal, then the braided mane down the neck. Ysolde would not let her shade the eyes by daylight. A giraffe, she said, looked at you as though it had all the time in the world, and the shadows must agree.
When the frames came down, the Chancellor walked between the panels and frowned. "Which one is the true giraffe?" Nell said nothing. She had dotted a small seven-point mark at the foot of each heel, and the Chancellor, who knew nothing of such things, let it pass and paid them in silver.
That night the panels hung on the gate, facing each other across the road. Ysolde came out with a lamp and stood between them. In the morning, Nell found her own work had been copied stitch for stitch by someone who had crept up in the dark, and then she found the same thing on Ysolde's side. Neither of them had done it. The mark had simply been made twice, and the two giraffes looked back at each other across the cobbles, each exactly the other's shadow.
