Brother Osric had kept the bell at Saint Cuthwin's for thirty winters, and in all that time no beast had come to the gate without being driven off with a stick. The stag that stood there in the first hard frost was different. It did not paw the ice or lower its head. It simply waited, its breath going up in two slow clouds, while the snow settled on the great branching antlers until they looked like a dead oak in the dark.

The abbot wanted it shot for the pot. The cellarer wanted it gone before the brothers saw it and started talking. Osric went out with a lantern and a heel of bread, and found that the animal's eyes were the same soft grey as the wool on his own sleeve. He set the bread on the step and went back in without a word, and every morning after that the bread was gone and the stag was there, a little closer each time.
By Candlemas it was taking bread from his palm. By Lent it had followed him as far as the orchard wall. Nobody in the valley could remember a stag coming down so far from the high forest, and the villagers began to say the monastery had been given a guardian, which the abbot did not like, because it made the brothers proud.
When the thaw came the stag walked off up the fell and did not return. Osric went to the gate every evening for a year, lantern in hand, bread in his pocket. On the anniversary of its first visit he found a single antler shed on the step, pale as bone, and beside it a small heap of crumbs, swept neatly together as if someone had tidied up after a guest.
