Stag head on the back of a hand

Neo-trad · Hand · Mixed · Photo

A stag's head with branching antlers sits on the back of a hand, centred over the middle and ring finger bases. The antlers and face are shaded in soft greys with a dark outline, and the muzzle and eyes are picked out in white. Purple and yellow accents add colour to the face and a vertical strip down the nose, against a plain light background.

Dear Tomasz,

You won't believe what came up the stairwell on Tuesday. I was coming back from the Co-op with the bags cutting into my fingers, and there on the fourth landing was a stag, bigger than any I've seen outside the telly, standing right where Mrs Okafor leaves her pram. Its antlers scraped the ceiling. It just looked at me with those pale, white-muzzled eyes, as though I was the one who'd wandered in. I put the shopping down very slowly and said good evening, which sounds mad written down, but Dad always said you talk to anything bigger than you.

It went up the last flight after that, all the way to the roof, and by the time I got up there the wind was pulling at the washing lines and the stag was standing on the edge of the wall with the whole estate spread out below it, the orange streetlights coming on one by one. Nobody else was up there. Nobody else seemed to have noticed. I stood by the door with my heart going, and it turned its head and looked past the retail park at the hills beyond, and I swear it was deciding something.

Then it stepped off the parapet as if it were stepping off a kerb. I ran to the edge expecting the worst, and there was nothing below but the car park and a single gold feather drifting past the bins. I've kept it in my purse. I don't know what I'm meant to make of it.

Anyway, I'm not telling you this to worry you. Come home at Easter if you can. The lift's still broken, so bring your legs. Love, Nan
