Stag with peony antler wreath on thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A stag's head in brown and grey shading faces left, with its bold outlined antlers wreathed in pink peonies, a yellow daisy-like bloom, small orange blossoms and green leaves. The fur is rendered with fine stippled and hatched shading, while the flowers and leaves use flat colour with dark outlines. The design sits diagonally across the thigh, with the stag's head in the lower right and the floral wreath spanning the upper left.

Nobody on the eleventh floor of Harrow Court could say when the stag first came up the stairwell. They only knew that by the spring the Pryce boy found it standing on the walkway at six in the morning, nosing a bucket of red peonies as if it had been sent to inspect them. The caretaker wanted it moved. Mrs Pryce said it had climbed eleven floors on its own four legs and could go down them the same way when it pleased.

So the residents took to planting for it. Peonies from the market, yellow daisies from the garage forecourt, orange blossom cut from the corner shop's tree and rooted in old paint tins. Each morning the stag walked the length of the walkway, stopping at every bucket, and by May the flowers had wound themselves into its antlers without anyone tying a single stem. People leaned out of their doors to watch it pass. A man with a clipboard came to ask about the health and safety of it, and went away with a peony tucked behind his ear and no clipboard in his hand.
In June a letter arrived saying the block would come down in September. The hoarding went up round the car park. The stag stopped coming to the walkway, and the buckets sat empty in their rows for a week, then two.
On the last Saturday of August the caretaker found the buckets overturned and a trail of petals down the stairwell, all eleven flights, to the bottom step, where a single peony lay pressed flat as a letter. Beyond the hoarding, on the wasteground by the canal, the stag stood among the nettles with two blooms still caught in its antlers. It turned its head once towards the grey tower, then went on down to the water.
