Rainbow tattoo on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A small rainbow arc sits on the inner forearm, with bands of red, orange, yellow, green, teal, blue and purple. The lines are solid and bold with smooth, flat colour fills and no shading. A curved section is cut out of the lower centre of the arc, leaving a notch, and the design sits against a plain skin tone with a dark background.

Dear Ruth,

The Morven Lass came in on the top of the tide yesterday with the hold half full of whiting and a split in the wheelhouse window that Dougie has taped over with a feed sack. We lost two days to the weather off Peterhead and I have had enough of the sea for a while, so when the skipper said we would tie up at Fraserburgh for a week I did not argue.
Coming in past the breakwater we had a squall behind us and the sun low ahead, and there was a rainbow stood right across the harbour mouth. Not the faint sort you get in a shower. Proper colour, red on the outside going down through orange and yellow and green to the blue and the purple at the heart. The bottom of it was hidden behind the grey of the last cloud, so it looked as if someone had taken a bite out of it, and the bite was the shape of the lighthouse gallery. Dougie swore it was a sign. I told him it was just the light doing what light does.
I have been thinking about it all morning though, sat here with the kettle going. You always said I could never keep a thing whole for longer than a tide. Maybe you were right. But the gap in it did not make the colours any less bright. They still reached all the way down to the water.
Write soon, and tell your mother the lamb was not my fault.
Love, Tom
