Rainbow faceted heart on chest

Geometric · Chest · Colour · Photo

A heart shape is built from angular facets, like a cut gemstone, with each section shaded in a different colour. The colours run through a rainbow from red and orange at the lower left to yellow, green and blue at the top right and pink at the bottom. The tattoo sits centrally on pale skin with a couple of small moles nearby, and the image is a close, straight-on view.

"Keep the wheel steady, Nell, or the facet walks off the line." Her grandfather didn't look up from the stone clamped in the dop, a clouded lump of quartz no bigger than a hazelnut. Outside the shed the Bramley windfalls had gone soft in the long grass, and wasps had found them, a low drone under the open door.

She had been cutting for three weeks and the heart was still lopsided. He told her to stop thinking about the heart at all and think only about angles, one plane at a time, until the shape arrived by itself, the way a lamb finds the gate once the hedge is down.

The last face mattered most. He tipped the stone toward the window so the late sun went through it and threw a scatter of colour across the bench: red first, then orange, then a green so sharp it looked wet. Nell had stopped trying to name them.

"Every face takes the light a little differently," he said. "You don't make the colours. You only give them somewhere to sit."

When she carried it up to the house that evening the orchard was gold and the ladders leaned against the trees with the pickers long gone home. Her mother held the stone to the lamp for a long time, then said only that the heart was crooked in the best possible way, and that it was ready to be set.
