Fine line cursive script on the foot
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a bare foot, turned to show its side, with a single word in thin, flowing cursive script. The linework is fine and even, with a long tail that sweeps up towards the ankle. The photograph is greyscale with soft shadows, and the background is dark.

Mr Aldous Penrose had painted boat names along the Tyne for thirty years, and he never once let a tail run past the edge of a transom. So when the girl came up the slip with a wet sack of tools and asked for a name in one unbroken line, he said no before she had finished the sentence.

She didn't argue. She opened a tin of sketches instead: her grandmother's hand, copied from a birthday card, the capitals looping like fishing line. "Two names, run together," she said. "Lily and Kate. They were sisters who never once finished a sentence without the other." He took up the brush anyway, because the sketch was careful and the tide was out and there was nothing else to paint.
He worked the L with a rigger brush, lifted the pen stroke clean, and at the y the line began to lean where he hadn't meant it to. By the final e the tail swept up past the name board and into the grey sky, thin as a strand of gold leaf. The girl watched it dry without touching it, the way you'd watch a kettle you were not yet ready to lift.
When the boat went down the slip on the spring tide, the name ran off the transom and over the dull paint of the hull like a wake. Aldous saw her on the quay afterwards, reading the lettering from the water side, and she lifted one hand to him. He went back to his tins and did not paint a tail again for the rest of that year.
